Participate in the 2025 MIT Physician Shadowing Program – Apply Now!

Each spring semester, Prehealth Advising coordinates the MIT Physician Shadowing Program from February through May.  During these months, Prehealth Advising pairs MIT undergraduates with partnering physicians at local hospitals for a 1-day shadowing opportunity.  The program is designed to offer MIT undergraduates an opportunity to explore a career as a physician and observe physician’s direct interactions with their patients.

During the spring semester 2025, the program’s participants will shadow a physician at Greater Boston Hospitals, including Boston Children’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and other facilities in surgical and medical specialties including neurology, cardiology, and oncology, and many others.

Application Timeline & Shadowing Opportunities Offered

Applications to participate in the Physician Shadowing Program are now open – apply here!

The deadline is Friday, January 31st at 12:00 pm EST.  All shadowing opportunities take place in the spring semester, between February and May.

The number of shadowing opportunities we can offer varies each year and is determined by the amount of physicians that participate.  Applications will be accepted in the order they are received as complete; an application is not complete until all documentation has been submitted.  Preference will given to applicants with limited shadowing experience.

If addition to the Physician Shadowing Program, you can also use our Guide to Shadowing a Physician, which includes the most common ways MIT applicants acquire shadowing opportunities.

Requirements to Participate

To participate in the program, you must be a MIT undergraduate student.  Students are required to have an influenza vaccination (within 6 months) and COVID-19 vaccination.  Some hospitals’ individual departments may require additional vaccinations and documentation (e.g. TB shot, current year COVID-19 vaccine and/or booster, etc.).

Are You a Physician Interested in Participating?

If you are a physician interested in offering a MIT undergraduate the opportunity to shadow you, please complete this interest form and/or email Akunna Rosser, Senior Assistant Director, at arosser@mit.edu.

  • Interested Physicians, submit your shadowing opportunity on here
