What did you dream about being when you were growing up?
When I was about 10 years old my parents gave me a book about the Titanic and Dr. Robert Ballard, which kickstarted a fascination with both history and marine archaeology, so growing up I wanted to search for lost shipwrecks. Years later in college, I partly studied television production and wanted to turn that into a career as a researcher within educational programming on National Geographic or Discovery.

What was your first job: I was a bookseller at Barnes & Noble in my junior and senior years of high school. I typically staffed the cash register or shelved books, but one day that asked me to work my shift in the café that was part of the store. I was never asked to work in the café again after that shift, and with good reason. In completely unrelated news, I don’t drink coffee.

My favorite time of year at MIT/Cambridge/Kendall Sq…
I have a couple of favorites. In late spring the weather lifts your spirits after a dreary long New England winter. Kendall Square has a farmers market that is a great place to grab lunch and spend time enjoying the outdoors with colleagues. The other time of the year that I absolutely love is the Fall, particularly by the Charles River and the off the beaten path spots around campus between buildings where you find lovely courtyards with beautiful landscaping.

What song would you say best sums you up?
I would say “What I got” by Sublime. I try my best to always be kind, be empathetic, and live the most worry free life that I can. Close second choice song: “I’m a Loser” by The Beatles.
