All internship positions are designed to give college students an opportunity to apply techniques learned in an academic setting while obtaining new skills. This is a paid internship offering part-time hours during the semester. The intern will be assisting with gene-edited cell line development, including cell culture maintenance, nucleic acid preparation, and analysis of editing activity. At the project’s end, the intern will be expected to summarize his/her work with a presentation to the group.
Responsibilities
- Review scientific literature to gain background knowledge.
- Assist with cell culture, including media preparation and passaging.
- Aid with screening through nucleic acid extraction, PCR, and sequencing reactions.
- Perform basic microbiology work including transformation, cloning, and plasmid preparation.
- Analyze, interpret and present data during weekly meetings.
Desired Skills
- Previous cell culture experience: aseptic technique, mammalian cell culture, passaging, media preparation
- Molecular biology skills: nucleic acid extraction (ex: gDNA extraction), nucleic acid quantification and purification, PCR
- Microbiology experience is a plus: transformation, plasmid preparation
Requirements / Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or other relevant science.
- Have a willingness to learn new techniques and troubleshoot experiments.
- Able to communicate effectively in a group setting.
- Availability to work ~20 hours/week in person during the semester (standard work week)
Students must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
- At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date
- Be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
