The Early Career Development Program (ECDP) is a two-year program in which participants will have the opportunity to gain valuable design and field engineering experience. As part of the Program, you will be required to visit our plant sites, as needed. Expected travel is about 25%. Candidates are required to have a Bachelor’s degree. Ideal candidates will be new or recent grads, with up to 2 years of relevant experience. For a list of additional qualifications, please refer to the Position Requirements section below.
The ECDP Engineer I (Electrical) will participate in one or more of the following areas:
- Plant upgrade projects, capital projects
- Support Operations and field assignments
The ECDP Engineer I (Electrical) assignments are a structured career development program to develop today’s new hires into tomorrow’s subject matter experts and leaders. Assignments will be structured to fill the following needs:
- The developmental needs of the ECDP
- The needs of the business and shareholders
- The resource needs of the Engineering and Projects Departments
- The needs of the facilities
Expectations of the ECDP Engineer I (Electrical):
There will typically be (2) year-long assignments, which may include a combination of the following: relay protection, electrical system modelling, operations support and new construction design. In unusual cases, assignments durations may be changed for business or personnel reasons. Assignments will be planned collaboratively with Engineering, Projects and Operations leadership and the ECDP, coordinated by respective hiring managers within the Engineering team.
Covanta’s Environment:
Covanta’s Waste to Energy Facilities include boilers, steam turbine generators, Steam condensers, metals recovery equipment, air pollution control equipment, conveying systems, waste and ash handling/distribution systems, plant utilities and cranes.
What You’ll Do:
Reporting directly to the Director of Technical Standards, the ECDP Electrical Engineer I will provide support for electrical aspects of capital projects, operations support and infrastructure assessment projects at various EFW (Energy from Waste) operating facilities.
Responsibilities include but not limited to any of the following:
- Upgrades and Troubleshooting: Support development of plant upgrades and technical troubleshooting, using RCA/Problem Solving Methodologies.
- Capital Projects: Support the Project Management Office (PMO) through capital project leadership or support, may also be required to perform project execution duties at larger facilities.
- Design Engineering: Support design engineering activities for upgrade and new projects.
- Support development of scope of work for Electrical Projects with Architecture and Engineering (AE) firms
- Support development of specification for electrical equipment like switchgear, transformer, motors etc. and coordinate with suppliers
- Support design tasks so both the design and construction will be achieved within approved budget and schedule
Position Requirements:
Location: The role is based at our corporate office in Morristown, NJ. Some relocation assistance may be available. Hybrid schedule will be offered per company policy. Candidate must be willing to undertake travel as needed, which could be about 25%.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
Experience/Background: Internship, Co-Op or prior work experience in Electrical engineering

Experience with:
- One Line/Three Line Diagrams
- DC Control Schematics
- Wiring diagrams
- Arc Flash, Short Circuit & Voltage Drop Calculations
- Coordination Studies
