The Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) is looking to fill a Quality Assurance Data Validator (Chemist 4) position. This position will be located at the Manchester Environmental Laboratory (MEL) in Port Orchard, WA.
In this role, you will be coordinating with Ecology scientists on contracting and data validation needs, writing Scopes of Work for contracting, and performing data review/verification and validation of highly specialized laboratory analyses.
You will possess an in-depth understanding of the complex technical issues related to this position, have high attention to detail, and have the ability to communicate and collaborate with a diverse workforce.
The Environmental Assessment Program provides a range of scientific, monitoring, laboratory, and quality assurance services. Its mission is to measure, assess and communicate environmental conditions in Washington State.
The Manchester Environmental Laboratory (MEL) is the leading environmental laboratory for the State of Washington. We conduct environmental laboratory analyses on samples collected throughout Washington State for organic, inorganic, and microbiological contaminants. The laboratory also conducts analyses for toxics in children’s and consumer products.

What makes this role unique?
The agency undertakes a variety of projects and types of lab analyses that are contracted out to commercial labs. The data from those labs needs to be validated in order to be used to make meaningful decisions for the agency. The data to be validated are generated by instrumental techniques (such as HRGCMS and LCMSMS), are for a variety of matrices (e.g. water, sediment, tissue, and consumer products), and the types of toxic contaminants being evaluated include, but are not limited to:
- 209 PCB congeners
What you will do:
- Serve as a knowledgeable resource for and review Quality Assurance Project Plans.
- Manage contracts, including writing Scopes of Work, evaluating contract laboratory bids on Request for Quotation, and reviewing/verifying contract laboratory data.
- Validate data using the concepts in industry guidance documents, such as National Functional Guidelines and Department of Defense Data Validation Guidelines to assess data quality and usability.
- Interact with project officers, contract labs, the Manchester Lab Director, QA Coordinator, Contract Manager, Project Coordinator, Organics Unit Supervisor, Inorganics Unit Supervisor, and the Ecology QA Officer.
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, educational, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.
Option 1: A Bachelor’s degree with a major in chemistry or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of college level chemistry AND Six years of experience performing chemical analysis in an analytical laboratory.
Option 2: A Master’s degree as listed above (provided a Bachelor’s Degree and the required college-level chemistry courses have been achieved) AND Four years of experience of experience performing chemical analysis in an analytical laboratory.
Option 3: A Ph.D. as listed above (provided a Bachelor’s Degree and the required college-level chemistry courses have been achieved) AND Three years of experience of experience performing chemical analysis in an analytical laboratory.
Option 4: One year of experience as a Chemist 3 at the Department of Ecology, performing chemical analysis of environmental or consumer product samples following EPA and/or Standard Method analytical techniques in an analytical laboratory.
Special Requirements / Conditions of Employment:
This position is located within a federal facility and requires the passing of a Federal Government background check.
