The Southern Michigan Prescribed Fire Specialist serves as a prescribed fire planner and implementer for The Nature Conservancy on an as-needed basis. The Prescribed Fire Specialist may be asked to serve in a leadership role on prescribed burns throughout Southern Michigan on TNC preserves on an as-needed basis.
This is a temporary year-long position, scheduled to start immediately. The Prescribed Fire Specialist helps the restoration project manager write burn plans, design burn units, help train and develop fire personnel, and lead burns for single-day fire operations. Staffing needs for this position could average 40-50 hours per operation period (bi-weekly) at the discretion of the Restoration Project Manager. Operational periods are generally sporadic and clustered by opportune weather conditions, and no guarantee of a minimum number of opportunities is given or implied. The Southern Prescribed Fire Specialist can participate in opportunities only as their own schedules will allow, and thus participation on any given opportunity is not required.
The primary responsibilities of the Fire Specialist will be to write and review burn plans, implement burn plans, and obtain necessary permits to conduct prescribed fire operations.
