POSITION: We are launching the our first Math Corps in response to the needs of middle schools across D.C.!
The Literacy Lab recognizes that ensuring all students have the chance to develop math skills proficiently is an urgent and critical need. Our approach is to provide middle schools with evidence-based math interventions and full-time math tutors to implement a proven math model. With the help of assessment tools, their coaching teams, and The Literacy Lab’s program staff, our tutors help their students develop foundational math skills and greater opportunities in life.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
Math Corps tutors serve full-time from January – December 2022 and work with a caseload of about 22-26 students who need targeted math support. At their school site, tutors implement Math Corps specific math interventions, conduct weekly progress monitoring, and work with a team of coaches to make data-informed decisions to ensure each child is on track to develop foundational math skills proficiency.
Tutors are a part of the school community and work to build strong relationships with students, teachers, and other staff. In addition, tutors participate in community-based volunteer opportunities and ongoing professional development sessions.
What to Expect
- Be a change maker by providing math help to pairs of students during school hours.
- Be the reason struggling students build their confidence and skills.
- Be ready to grow by participating in on-site coaching sessions two times per month to review student progress and get feedback.
- Be impactful by participating in training and ongoing professional development.
- Be the motivation and represent Math Corps at school-sponsored activities (e.g., family night) to help build awareness of Math Corps.
- Be an ambassador of the program by sharing your experience with the wider community.
Perks as a Tutor
All tutors receive:
- $1600 Monthly Stipend ($800 Paid Every 2 Weeks)
- Segal Education Award For Tuition or Student Loans* – Amounts listed below following successful completion of service during outlined months.
- January – July 2022: $3,247.50
- August-December 2022: $2,474.27
- Federal Student Loan Forbearance and Interest Repayment
Tutors serving 40 hours a week are also eligible to receive:
Individual Health Insurance — Monthly Premium 100% Covered
Child Care Assistance — Based on Family Size and Income
*Segal AmeriCorps Education Award can be used to pay tuition or repay qualified student loans. Individuals 55+ may gift their award to their child, grandchild, stepchild or foster child.
At a minimum, a tutor must:
- Serve in a full-time capacity, approx. 8 hours/ day, M-F
- Commit to a full service term (January-December 2022)
- Implement feedback from coaches and program staff
- Utilize Math Corps specific data-based and scripted curriculum
- Participate in service days, ongoing training, and other Literacy Lab events and meetings
- Passionate about working with middle school students!
At a minimum, all tutors must:
- Be at least 17 years old
- Have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalency
- Have served no more than 3 previous AmeriCorps terms (no prior AmeriCorps experience necessary)
- Be a US citizen, national, or permanent resident
*DACA recipients are unfortunately not eligible to apply. Candidates must not be registered, or be required to register, on any sex offender registry.
