The Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) is seeking a Fundraising Intern to join the Development Team. This is a virtual and/or hybrid position paid at the rate of $15.20 an hour and will begin on Tuesday, February 1st.
NTI is a nonprofit global security organization focused on reducing nuclear and biological threats imperiling humanity. We work to create lasting, systemic change that prevents catastrophe—and helps ensure that our lives and livelihoods, our environment, and our quality of life can thrive now and in the future.
NTI is currently on a work from home status. A date for a full return to the office has not been set, but we do anticipate that it will be prior to the start of our Spring Intern Session.
We believe that the intern experience is most beneficial when in-person, and interns living in commutable distance from our DC office location should plan on working in person once our office is fully re-opened.
NTI is registered to employ staff living in D.C., Maryland, or Virginia. Candidates who cannot relocate to these areas during their internship, even while working remote, cannot be considered at this time.
In accordance with NTI’s duty to provide and maintain a workplace that is free of known hazards, we have adopted a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy. All employees, including interns working in our D.C. office, will be required to be fully vaccinated, unless a reasonable accommodation for medical reasons or sincerely held religious beliefs is requested and approved.
The Fundraising Intern will be a critical part of a team working to manage donor relationships and cultivate new support in a dynamic and growing institution. The successful candidate will conduct many aspects of administration and research for the development team, including researching prospective donors; creating briefings in advance of donor meetings; helping track the donor pipeline; entering information into our Salesforce database; drafting gift acknowledgements; and conducting other ad hoc projects as they arise.
The position requires strong research, time management, writing, and proofreading skills.
NTI interns are expected to commit to an internship period of at least 10 weeks (up to 15 weeks) beginning February 1, 2022 and should work a minimum of 16 hours per week (up to 40 hours per week). The internship will end no later than May 13, 2022.
NTI looks for talented individuals who bring diverse perspectives, exceptional interpersonal skills and strong organizational, writing, and communication skills. Selectees will be expected to attend a formal onboarding session conducted by Human Resources from 9am – 12pm EDT on February 1st. If you have special scheduling circumstances you would like us to take in consideration, please advise within your cover letter.

NTI internships are especially well-suited to undergraduate or graduate students with an interest in the intersection of global affairs, public policy, science, engineering, and national security. While an intern’s primary focus will be on NTI activities and projects, we encourage our interns to attend relevant congressional hearings, briefings at think tanks, or other career enhancing opportunities, and to develop their professional network throughout the internship. NTI provides each intern an opportunity to build a relationship with a mentor in addition to a day-to-day manager to ensure the intern receives regular guidance and feedback. NTI regularly hosts internal “brown bag” sessions and seminars open to the public, which all interns are encouraged to participate.
Unfortunately, the field of nuclear and biological threat reduction has not done enough to incorporate the perspectives of individuals from diverse backgrounds, abilities, and experiences. NTI is committed to building a diverse team and strongly encourages people of color, women, and people with disabilities to apply for this internship.
To be considered for the position, applicants must have legal authorization (e.g. U.S. citizenship or a valid visa) to work in the United States and must be located in Washington, D.C., Virginia, or Maryland throughout the duration of the internship. NTI does not sponsor work visas for interns.
NTI is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will be considered without attention to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status, personal appearance, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, familial status, family responsibilities, political affiliation, genetic information, disability, or any other quality or circumstance protected by Federal or D.C. law.
To apply, please submit a resume and cover letter via Handshake by October 20, 2021.
