ISO New England oversees the 24/7 operation of the power grid that covers the six-states of New England and administers the region’s $10+ billion “stock exchange” for the buying and selling of wholesale electricity. The power system is constantly evolving as new technologies emerge and energy policies evolve. There is a lot going on at our organization behind the scenes to make sure the grid continuously yields reliable electricity at competitive prices while addressing the unique challenges that come along with our industry.
Internship Title – PMU Data Analytics and Visualization

Advanced Technology Solutions (ATS) is the think tank of ISO New England. It makes strategic planning and provides technical solutions to various business units at the ISO. The department conducts R&D in power system and emerging technology, market design and operation, and software development for simulation.
What will you be working on:
In this role, you will analyze ISO-NE’s PMU measurement data using statistic or machine learning techniques, and build transmission system overview display with PMU data to visualize power system operation conditions and normal/abnormal status.
How will you make an impact:
Your work will help us to analyze terabytes of PMU historical data to extract useful operational information.
Through this internship, you will gain an understanding of how ISO operates the power grid, what information is needed for operational situational awareness.
What we look for in a candidate:
- Strong power system background;
- Knowledge in data science, strong mathematical and programming skills;
- Experience in using power system analysis software such as PowerWorld and PSS/E;
- Familiar with Synchrophasor technology
