Harvard Business School seeks a highly motivated individual to work closely with a HBS faculty member as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for an exciting MBA elective data science course, Data Science for Managers, which will be taught as 8-week half courses during the year.
The goal of the course is to give MBA students the tools to evaluate data-driven insights and to productively collaborate with data analysts to make the best managerial decisions their roles require. The course will teach the foundational statistical techniques and software packages most frequently used by data scientists, including R and Tableau.
The TA position reports directly to faculty supervisors and works closely with the Faculty and Research Staff Services office. The ideal candidate will be comfortable in an environment that requires an exacting level of quality and intellectual rigor. They will enjoy collaborating with HBS faculty.
Under the direction of the faculty, the TA will support students with answering technical questions during classroom sessions, and lead students during weekly lab sessions. The TA will need to attend class and lab sessions in person.
Candidate should be proficient in R, tableau, and in basic statistical analysis as described below:
1. Course Introduction, Data Visualization (Using Tableau)
2. Exploratory Data Analysis and Basic Use of R
3. Probability and Monte Carlo Simulation
4. Statistical Inference and Prediction (Confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, A/B tests)
5. Study/Survey Design (Sampling, design of experiments)
6. Linear Models I (Single- and multi-variable regression, prediction, goodness of fit)
7. Linear Models II (Binary/categorical variables, interaction terms, comparing models)
8. Logistic Regression and other topics
Responsibilities for course would total about ten hours per week. If there is sufficient demand, some TAs could work with 2 sections, which would double everything but preparation time and teaching group meeting time:
Attend teaching group meeting (~1 hour)
Prepare for Lab session (~2 hours)
Attend lab session (80 minutes)
Prepare for class (~2 hours)
Attend class (80 minutes)
Oversee/respond to questions on slack during the week (~1 hour)
Hold office hours (~1 hour)
Graduate student with strong background in data analysis, experience with R and Tableau preferred. Additional background in data analysis, statistics and machine learning is also helpful.
This is a part-time term appointment starting this September 2021. Time commitment is 10 hours/week during the 8-week term.
Hourly rate is commensurate with experience.
HBS is not able to provide visa sponsorship for this position.
