A Research Technician’s position is available immediately in the Clinical Research Division of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC), Seattle, WA. The successful applicant will work with Dr. Matthias Stephan, M.D., Ph.D. to explore the fast-developing and highly interdisciplinary field of immunobioengineering (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-19486-2). Using next-generation immunomodulatory synthetic materials, the Research Technician will help develop new approaches beyond existing T-cell-based therapies to therapeutically manipulate the immune system against cancer (https://www.nature.com/magazine-assets/d41586-017-08701-8/d41586-017-08701-8.pdf).
The Research Technician II is responsible for performing standard and investigative laboratory work in support of scientific research by performing bench-level experiments, operating analytical instruments, recovering, compiling and verifying the accuracy of research data; performing calculations; preparing charts, graphs and summaries.
- Perform experiments at the bench level to support investigative work. Prepare and maintain laboratory reagents, stocks, cultures or cell lines. Perform and modify documented protocols and assays. Maintain laboratory records and compile data on experiments and assays.
- Interpret and report on experimental results. Perform statistical analysis of test results and prepare written reports on work performed
- Identify methodological problems in research protocol and implement modifications to optimize experimental results
- Prepare and present written or oral progress reports concerning studies including assembly, organization, and interpretation of data
- Assist in the design of experiments; may be responsible for the performance of individual research projects
- Conduct literature reviews to assist in determining most suitable methods to be used in research
- Assist in publication of results by proofreading, editing, and contributing ideas
- May perform statistical analyses, write computer programs, or manage research data base
The Research Technician III Performs the duties of the Research Technician II plus:
- May lead or supervise other laboratory personnel and be responsible for the daily operation of the laboratory.
- Collaborate with primary investigator and assist in designing experiments; examine proposals to determine projects and methodologies best suited to research objectives and the overall goals of the laboratory.
- Summarize and write for publication or presentation the results of research projects, often as co-author or author. Edit and write reports of research.
- Consult with the Principal Investigator and others in the scientific community on problems and related projects.
- Determine the most suitable methods to be used in research; determine appropriate experimental controls.
- Conduct literature reviews to assist in determining most suitable methods to be used in research.
- BS or MS in the areas of immunology, cell biology, biochemistry or related field.
- Intermediate level position requiring 2 years previous experience working in a laboratory
- Independent research experience outside of laboratory course work is usually necessary
- The Research Technician III position is a senior level position requiring extensive experience in a laboratory. Generally, the incumbent will possess a master’s degree in a related scientific field.
- Excellent knowledge of multi-color and intracellular flow cytometry, and data analysis using FlowJo software desired.
- Strong proficiency in the development and execution of cell-based assays for immune cell function (T-cell proliferation, cytokine release, and cytotoxicity assays) with murine and human primary T cells is required.
