Communications Intern or Fellow
Energy Futures Initiative (EFI) Inc. is a nonprofit energy think tank dedicated to science-based solutions to climate change through analysis, thought leadership, and coalition-building. As part of its public education mission, EFI supports an on-going program of Communications Fellows and Interns. EFI, founded by former U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz in 2017 to address the climate crisis, is offering a paid summer job opportunity for communications and marketing Interns and Fellows.
EFI offers Fellowships and Internships to individuals who are pursuing a degree in a field relevant to EFI’s work or a fellowship to a graduate preferred in the following disciplines: energy & the environment, communications, or public policy.
· Communications Interns: EFI offers Internships to individuals who are pursuing or who have completed an undergraduate degree in a field relevant to EFI’s work. Internships are typically for a semester and interns are non-exempt employees and may be full time (40 hours/week) or part time. Interns also do communications and logistical work on an ad hoc basis, usually tasks directly related to research or work products. Interns also assist in office-wide administrative tasks. Internships are paid on an hourly basis at a base rate of $20/hr.
· Communications Fellows: EFI offers research Fellowships to individuals who are pursuing or have completed an advanced degree (post undergraduate) in a field relevant to EFI’s work. A Fellow may also have some project management responsibilities, including coordinating with project partners and sponsors, communicating with outside experts, and taking the lead on social media campaigns and outreach. Fellowships are offered for a fixed term (typically a semester or aligned with a specific project duration). Fellows are nonexempt employees and are paid on an hourly basis. Fellows may be full time (40 hours/ week) or part time. Fellowships are paid on an hourly basis at a base rate of $22/hr.
Since 2020, Fellows and Interns may work remotely due to COVID-19. The ability to join and participate in business meetings within the normal working hours of the Eastern Time Zone (9:00 am-5:00 pm ET) is required.
The communications team works on social media outreach, including providing illustrations and content for LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, the EFI website, and the EFI newsletter. Setting up, preparing materials for, and supporting workshops and external events such as webinars are also key components of the position. Experience in handling large-scale communications campaigns and/or organizing special events (invitations/follow-up communications/logistical details and venue coordination) will be key skills as we continue to engage in virtual public outreach.
- Assisting with EFI’s social media and web presence, including updating the EFI website on a regular basis, which includes drafting blog posts on EFI activity.
- Creating graphic presentations of EFI content that can be shared on social media.
- Preparing thorough briefing books for senior leaders at EFI.
- Creating and maintaining databases for content distribution to other energy influencers, reporters, U.S. policy makers and their staffs.
- Proven ability to collate and analyze marketing data—email penetration, open rates, and effective ways of furthering outreach.
Eligibility & Skills
- Background in energy or communications preferred, candidates will be considered from economics and finance departments
- Current undergraduate, post-graduate student, or recent graduate
- GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
- Familiarity with Adobe InDesign, Affinity Publisher, and/or Canva
- Familiarity with Constant Contact, SailThru, or MailChimp
- Ability to work accurately with complicated data sets to deliver on firm deadlines
- Understanding of the value of social media in promoting policy
- U.S. citizen or Visa to work in the U.S. for the period
- Short letter of introduction
- Writing sample (on an energy topic)
- Optional, but a plus: Graphic design portfolio
