Reporting to the Executive Director and Operations / Communications Manager, Northeast Big Data Innovation Hub (NEBD Hub), Data Science Institute (DSI), Columbia University, the grant-funded position of the National Student Data Corps Program Coordinator will be a key member of the Hub team. The Program Coordinator will support Hub operations for the National Student Data Corps program (NSDC), coordinating with other Hub team members on communications, event management, and project development. The NSDC is a community-developed initiative that teaches data science fundamentals to students from the Northeastern United States and around the world, with a special focus on underserved institutions and students. The successful candidate will be a trusted, collaborative colleague possessing excellent collaboration, communication and organizational skills to effectively interface with the Hub’s numerous stakeholders, and to grow the NSDC.
The NSDC Program Coordinator will be primarily responsible for the ongoing organization and management of the NSDC program, including developing the community, including membership, events, mentoring, and the NSDC chapter program. This will include leading the engagement with the NSDC Founding Committee, and the addition of an NSDC Student Advisory Council. They will engage with academic institutions, professors, students, industry and nonprofit collaborators, paying particular attention to the Corps’ brand image, events, resource listings, website, outreach and collaboration tools such as the Slack channel and social media.. They will coordinate the Hub student casuals’ workflow to accomplish the NSDC mission. The Program Coordinator will work directly with the Executive Director and Operations & Communications Manager to develop the NSDC website and resource listings. The incumbent will also work with the Hub’s REAL volunteer program student coordinator to ensure volunteers are aligned and assigned to NSDC tasks and programs appropriately, and for excellent delivery of events and programs.
Mentorship & Chapter Program:
The Program Coordinator will work with the Executive Director, Operations & Communications Manager, student casuals, and external stakeholders to advance a mentorship program for members of the NSDC community. The Coordinator will also develop a new certification or badge program for NSDC volunteers and chapter members.
The NSDC Program Coordinator will plan and execute an events management system for all NSDC programs, bearing in mind the timing, preparations, execution, and follow-up needs for each event. The Coordinator will work closely with the Hub’s student casuals to develop NSDC panels and associated webpages and communications strategies. The Coordinator will facilitate the creation of a new webinar series using community survey input. Another important project will involve supporting the Operations & Communications Manager in developing an event transcripts archive for NSDC programs. Collaboration with Hub external partners on curricula development and events organization will also be required.
NSDC Resources and Content:
As the NSDC grows, the Program Coordinator will coordinate student casuals in building content for the Video Library, Career Central, Learner Central, Educator Central, and Career Central.
The Program Coordinator will also work directly with the Operations & Communications Manager on social media posts and newsletter items for the NSDC and add creative content to the NSDC’s dedicated Slack channel to boost community engagement. Along with the Operations & Communications Manager, the incumbent will collect, analyze, and act upon data related to community participation in NSDC events and website use. Preferably, the Program Coordinator will also edit and upload video recordings of NSDC events to the Hub’s YouTube channel.
Other projects and tasks as assigned by the Executive Director and Operations & Communications Manager.
Academic and Professional Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and/or its equivalent experience required. Up to 2 years of related experience.
- Experience building websites in WordPress, Drupal
- Knowledge of Google Drive and associated tools
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects; exceptional organizational and communication skills
- Experience working collaboratively and independently
- Ability to anticipate, adapt and problem solve
- Graphic design skills a plus, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or Canva
- Experience in video editing
- Some supervisory experience a plus
- Enthusiasm for education, outreach, community building
- Focus on diversity, equity and inclusion, especially outreach to underrepresented and underserved institutions, students and communities
