The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Cancer Center is looking for a highly motivated Senior Computational Biologist to lead the Bioinformatics Core of the Sequencing Technologies and Analysis Shared Resource, which develops new technologies at the cutting edge of genome science, including new assays that take advantage of long-read and single-cell sequencing technologies.
The successful candidate will join a world-renowned scientific community, and will provide support for high throughput sequencing and genomic research. The sequencing group has broad expertise in various platforms, including Illumina, PacBio, and Oxford Nanopore, and is a world leader in long-read sequencing. The BSR works closely with the sequencing group and with CSHL scientists to analyze data from high-throughput sequencing experiments (DNA sequencing, bulk and single cell RNA-seq and ChIP-seq, etc). The person will play a critical role in oversight of operation of the core facility, including providing consultation on study design, training in use of bioinformatics tools, and assistance with analysis. An important part of this position will be the ability to work collaboratively with scientists at CSHL to develop novel experimental designs, workflows, and new analytical methods, and to make these methods accessible through a user-friendly interface.
- RESPONSIBILITIESManage the Bioinformatics Shared Resource
- Provide bioinformatics support for high throughput sequencing data analyses.
- Provide scientific guidance, expertise, and training to CSHL scientific staff, including consultation on experimental design and analysis plans.
- Train scientists in the use of bioinformatics software.
- Evaluate new software for introduction into the facility.
- Construct web applications of bioinformatics tools and/or supervise staff with this responsibility.
- Assist with preparation of manuscripts, funding applications, and progress reports.
- Supervise one or more Computational Analysts, and advise them in maintaining, improving and developing services.
- Review projects to assure quality, accuracy, validity and user satisfaction with results.
- Project tracking and billing, monthly budget reports.
Education: A PhD in a bioinformatics related field (Bioinformatics, Biology, Computational Biology, Computer Science)
Experience/Skills: A strong background in computational and at least 3 years of relevant post-doctoral experience. The candidate must be fluent in Python and R, and comfortable using UNIX based high performance compute clusters. The candidate must also be familiar with standard bioinformatics software tools used in in genomics analyses, and understand the advantage and limitations of each. The candidate must have excellent oral and written communication skills, and be able to lead and motivate a team.
