This position is a 6 month Co-op lasting from January – June 2022
As a Co-op student in the Research Organization, you will investigate important cell biological pathways for potential interventions to treat for neurological, neuromuscular and retinal disorders, including, but not limited to ALS, muscular dystrophy, and monogenic developmental encephalopathies.
You will work closely with drug discovery scientists to help validate new therapeutic targets and develop in vitro models of disease using cell and molecular biology techniques. You will perform tissue culture, characterize specialized cell types, analyze data and present findings in project team meetings.
Example projects for 2022 Co-op students include:
- You will work with the stem cell biology group to develop and characterize protocols for differentiation of human inducible pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) into retinal pigmented epithelia (RPE). You will work with stem cell scientists to characterize the resulting cells using a variety of cell and molecular biology techniques. You will gain valuable experience with skills such as sterile technique, care and feeding of stem cells, differentiation of stem cells, retinal biology, immunohistochemistry, image analysis and qPCR.
- You will work with the Neuromuscular disorders group to evaluate the potential role of a novel therapeutic target in ameliorating TDP-43 related pathology in different ALS models including in vitro systems, cellular models like iPSC-derived neurons, and TDP-43 mouse models using a range of molecular and biochemical techniques. You will gain valuable experience with skills such as tissue culture, molecular assays, biochemical assays, and microscopy.
- You will work with the Neuromuscular disorders group to characterize in vitro models of human muscle disorders using iPSC derived muscle bundles and monitor the impact of AAV-engineered gene products using a range of technical approaches. You will gain valuable experience with tissue culture, molecular biology and immunohistochemistry techniques, microscopy and image analysis.
- You will work with the Neuromuscular disorders group in the in vitro and in vivo characterization of targets for muscle fibrosis in the context of muscular dystrophies. You will gain valuable experience in molecular, cellular and in vivo studies.
- You will work with the Genetic and Neurodevelopmental disorders group to develop and evaluate in vitro and in vivo models of epileptic encephalopathies. You will gain valuable experience with AAV-mediated gene delivery, tissue culture of primary neurons protein quantification techniques (western blot, immunohistochemistry) and confocal microscopy.
To participate in the Biogen Internship Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
- At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date
- Be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
Interests and experiences (including coursework with laboratories) in the following areas preferred,
- Molecular biology (cloning, PCR), biochemistry (Western blot, protein extraction)
- And/or microscopy (immunostaining)
- And/or Tissue culture
- And/or AAV construct design and delivery
Enrolled in BS, MS or PhD program.
Majoring in: Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell biology, Neuroscience or related Biological sciences
