Income Tax Info for MIT International Students & Postdocs

MIT’s Office of the Vice President for Finance provides online and in-person resources for foreign national students and postdocs at MIT for tax withholding, determination of tax treaty eligibility, and tax filing software. International students and postdocs may access:

Sprintax

  • Sprintax Calculus is a tax compliance platform software designed to help nonresident aliens and resident aliens (for tax purposes) determine their U.S. tax status, and their status with regard to tax treaties.
  • MIT also offers free U.S. federal online income tax filings for nonresident alien students and scholars via Sprintax Returns. (If an individual’s tax status requires them to file a paper tax return, Sprintax will charge a small fee for this service.) Sprintax Returns is available during tax filing season through the MIT International Students Office (ISO) and International Scholars Office (ISchO), and requires login using MIT Touchstone with MIT Kerberos credentials.

Sprintax offers 24/7 customer support through its online chat feature for these two services.

In-Person Support

VPF’s HR/Payroll team provides one-on-one appointments via Zoom if foreign national students, faculty, researchers, and staff need additional help to determine their U.S. tax status and complete required tax documentation forms. These appointments can be scheduled via the MIT Atlas Service Center.

Be sure to reference VPF’s Tax Guidance for Nonresident Aliens website for tax filing information and forms. The site provides specific information for students, scholars, and employees.

VPF staff cannot provide individual tax advice. Foreign nationals at MIT are strongly encouraged to consult a tax accountant who specializes in nonresident alien tax issues.
