The question: How can CAPD best support and engage first year undergraduates as they start their career development journey?
The answer: Ask a small group of sophomores to provide insight and ideas on programming and resources that target the needs and goals of first years. This fall, the FY Advisory Board is not only thinking about how to shape programs for first years but also how to make remote career exploration interesting and impactful.
Are you a first year student? Whether you are certain about pursuing industry or academia, uncertain about what you would like to do, or find yourself at any point somewhere in the middle, CAPD is able to help you navigate your needs. Watch the CAPD virtual orientation to learn about the different resources and support we provide as you begin to develop and progress towards your career goals.
Hello! I’m Anna, a rising sophomore in Course 2A. I am from Washington state, but I am currently living with some friends in Cambridge. At MIT, I run cross country and track, am a part of the NEET thread Living Machines, and am involved in a few clubs, one of which is FEMME (Female Empowerment Meets Mechanical Engineering). I also enjoy hiking, dabbling in cooking, reading, and generally spending as much time as I can outdoors. This fall I will be UROPing, running, and trying to make the best of these crazy times!
Hi! My name is Fiona Lin, and I’m a Class of ’23 in Course 6-7, Molecular Biology and Computer Science. My hometown is Fort Lauderdale, FL, but I spent the first 10 years of my life in Fujian, China. This past summer I have been UROP-ing with Media Lab’s Community Bio Initiative and with MIT Energy Initiative’s project SESAME to further develop my interest in integrating science with technology. Outside of school or work, I love to cook and bake, play with animals (especially cats!!!), watch indie movies and anime, grow stuff (currently oyster and shiitake mushrooms), hang out with friends, and fuel my boba addiction. I’m also part of the Lion Dance Team, where we do awesome shows with the lion dance family. This virtual fall, I’m looking forward to learning new skills, developing my professional and academic aspirations, exploring my interests, and just keep learning. I’m also looking forward to taking cool classes, hanging out with friends, studying Japanese, practicing juggling with the diabolo and puppy hammer, learning how to ride a drift skate, and have a productive semester!
Hi all, my name is Alex Quach, and I’m a sophomore in Course 6. This summer I worked as a PM intern on the Microsoft AzureML team. This fall I’ll be taking a light load of classes and working part-time at a startup and a startup incubator. I’m studying/working from my home near Orlando, FL. Some of my quarantine hobbies include amateur trap beat making, dancing, and skateboarding. I’m also interested in Responsible AI and social impact. This year, I am looking forward to trying to figure out solutions for these complicated times!!
Hi everyone! My name is Varsha Sandadi, and I’m a sophomore majoring in 6-9. I was born and raised in Southern California, which is where I’ll spent time with my family this summer. During the summer, I worked on some personal projects, did a ton of reading, and experimented with some new recipes in the kitchen. Outside of school and work, I enjoy reading, running, and travelling to new places with my friends. This semester I’m staying with a couple of friends in California so we can take virtual classes together. I’m grateful to be living with some of my MIT family during these strange times.
Hello! My name is Duha Syar and I am a sophomore in Course 10 exploring Course 3. This fall I am working on my UROP exploring gas separations through membranes, teaching for DynaMIT, and interning at a startup. Outside of school I love growing my scarf collection (52 scarves and counting) and exploring the outdoors- whether that means hiking a new trail or having an excursion into the city. I am on the Varsity Crew team and DormCon. This year I hope to delve deeper into my research and hopefully get ready for an amazing Spring athletic season.
